Facial Trauma Q&A

What is facial trauma?

Facial trauma is a broad term that includes all types of injuries that affect your face. You may have an isolated issue, such as a split lip, or a complex combination of injuries, which is common after car accidents. In any case, facial trauma may include any of the following conditions:

  • Mandible (jaw) fractures
  • Midface fractures
  • Upper face fractures
  • Facial laceration

But facial trauma isn’t always injury-related. Sometimes medical issues are to blame. Facial trauma treatments may be necessary for Mohs reconstruction, cleft lip or palate, or facial paralysis, for instance.

How does a doctor treat facial trauma?

Dr. Folk has extensive experience diagnosing, treating, and managing any acute or chronic facial injury. As a chief attending on staff at Level I and II hospital trauma centers, Dr. Folk has successfully performed hundreds of routine and complex facial trauma and reconstructive surgeries.

Depending on your needs, Dr. Folk can provide any of the following facial trauma procedures:

  • Laceration repair
  • Facial fracture repair
  • Nasal fracture surgery
  • Mandible fracture repair

Dr. Folk is an expert at grafting cartilage and tissues when necessary, which helps provide natural-looking, harmonious results after your trauma.

What is the recovery like after facial trauma surgery?

It depends on the extent of your injury. After your facial trauma procedure, Dr. Folk has you check in to Visage Surgical within a week or two. He monitors your healing and removes sutures once your wounds close.

For the first few weeks, swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort are common. Dr. Folk may recommend applying ice packs regularly to help with these issues. It’s also important to keep your head elevated and to avoid sleeping on your side or stomach during the initial healing stages.

Full recovery from facial trauma surgery can take at least six to eight weeks, with ongoing healing continuing after that point. Dr. Folk counsels you about how to care for your incisions to minimize scarring as much as possible.

If you have facial trauma, you can undergo personalized care at Visage Surgical. Book an evaluation online today, or call the clinic directly to schedule a visit.
