Facial Reconstruction Q&A

What is facial reconstruction?

Facial reconstruction is a procedure that’s personalized to you and any injuries or concerns you have. Depending on your needs, facial reconstruction can include any of the following types of procedures:

  • Face-lift, brow lift, ear surgery, or blepharoplasty
  • Fracture repair, including a rhinoplasty
  • Facial laceration repair
  • Reanimation

The purpose of facial reconstruction is to provide you with symmetrical results and aesthetically pleasing outcomes. No matter how minor or how complex your concerns may be, after facial reconstruction, you should feel more confident.

Why do I need facial reconstruction?

At Visage Surgical, you can undergo facial reconstruction for a number of reasons, from cosmetic to medical. Dr. Folk can design your facial reconstruction plan to correct any of the following issues (to name a few):

  • Asymmetry
  • Facial fractures
  • Facial paralysis
  • Congenital deformities
  • Serious cuts or open wounds
  • Scarring from burns or surgery, including Mohs surgery for skin cancer

Dr. Folk spends time counseling you about your facial reconstruction procedure and what you can expect, so you can work together to create a plan that’s going to exceed your expectations.

What happens during a facial reconstruction procedure?

No two facial reconstruction procedures from Visage Surgical are exactly alike. But in general, Dr. Folk may perform any of the following steps:\

  • Create flaps (local tissue rearrangement)
  • Graft or transfer skin, bone, or cartilage
  • Remove excess skin, tissue, or fat
  • Reconstruct or reshape bones
  • Rearrange muscles
  • Remove scar tissue

In some cases, facial reconstruction repairs are outpatient procedures. But if you need a series of complex repairs or if you have underlying health concerns, Dr. Folk may have you stay in the hospital for a night or two for observation.

What are typical treatments for facial reconstruction?

Facial reconstruction

Undergoing a facial reconstruction is highly beneficial after Mohs surgery for skin cancer. Dr. Folk can also perform reconstructive procedures to treat facial paralysis, repair facial lacerations, and correct congenital deformities.

Scar revision

Dr. Folk is highly skilled at scar revision procedures to dramatically minimize the appearance of surgical or injury scars.

How long is the recovery after facial reconstruction?

Minor swelling, discomfort, and bruising can last for up to two or three weeks. Even though full recovery from facial reconstruction can take at least six to eight weeks, you can feel confident that you’re going to have harmonious results. Dr. Folk is diligent about ensuring you achieve your desired outcome.
